Chapter 7: Battle for birth

As the sky of the late afternoon slowly dissolved into the early evening showing a mix of bright orange and red and some dark gloomy storm clouds in the distance, Humphrey, Garth, Lance, Nova and the other Alphas of Shadow’s pack were heading their way over to the hideout of Raiko’s pack. Marcel and Paddy had already flown ahead.
Just at the entrance of the territory they stopped to go over plans. “Alright you’ll follow our attack plan while Nova and I help Humphrey get Kate out of there” Lance said to the troops “And remember even though there’s only a quarter of Raiko’s army is there they are still strong so don’t let your guard down or underestimate their strength”. Soon enough the troops went into the territory while Lance, Humphrey, Garth and Nova went the in other direction.

A little later at the hideout
A scout ran from out of the woods and came over to Natasha and Slash “Ma’am there are troops from Shadow’s pack heading this way” “What! I know what their plan is but we can’t just let them come into here, Slash prepare our troops for battle!”

By now the mid-evening sky was covered with think, grey and dressing clouds.  A cold, rough wind blew harshly through the scene. All the troops at their battle positions ready to face their foes with blood thirsty faces of pure hatred. Slash walked towards the woods and sniffed. His ears pricked up as he caught the scent of incoming invaders, “Attack!” Slash shouted at same time of a thunder crack as Shadow’s troops leaped and the two armies charged into battle.

Meanwhile at the entrance of Kate’s prison cell the two guards there watched down at the devastation below them “Do you think we should help them Mick?” “No way Donald, we have to follow orders besides if we leave now someone might come and take Kate away and then we’ll have to answer to Natasha” “Good point”.

Suddenly a golf ball came flying towards the pair and made a clean hit on Donald knocking him out. “Donald!” Micky shouted at his knocked partner until another golf ball came flying and knocked him out.

Marcel and Paddy then flew into the scene “Sir may I say those were some amazing shots” Paddy said to Marcel “Thank you” Marcel said placing another golf ball on the ground “Now one more!” he shouted as he wracked the ball towards east distance.

From that direction Humphrey and the others were waiting for a signal. Soon the golf ball from Marcel was in viewing range.

“There’s the signal, let’s move” Humphrey said as he and the others made their way towards Kate’s prison. When they arrived they saw Marcel and Paddy helping Kate out of the cave.

“Humphrey!” “Kate!” the two excitly ran over to each other when suddenly something pounced Humphrey knocking them down to a lower ledge.  “Humphrey!” Lance shouted as he followed the two.

“Humphrey!” Kate said “Don’t worry Kate” Nova said “Lance is the best Alpha from our pack, Humphrey should be fine, the most important thing now is to get somewhere safe. Let’s move”

Suddenly Kate screamed as she collapsed holding her paw on her belly. Nova went to her to see what was wrong. There was a lot of wetness around her back legs. “What’s wrong?” Garth asked “Her water just broke” Nova said “Her pups are coming” “The pups are coming!” Marcel and Paddy said shocked. The two went over to her “Paddy may hold your wing?” “Um sure” Paddy said holding out his wing, Kate grabbed it with a tight grip causing the bird to quack in pain. “Okay Kate” Nova said “I know this procedure, first breath and when you feel your next contraction I need you to push as hard as you can for ten seconds” “Okay” Kate says and does as told.

Meanwhile down on a lower ledge Humphrey was trying to get back up from the attack. Another crack of thunder is heard and it had started to rain heavily. Humphrey steady got up saw a figure approaching him and saw that it was Natasha. “So Humphrey at last we meet, I figured that you would risk your life to save your mate just like your mother when she gave her life to save yours” “What?!” Humphrey said “And now I shall finish what my father started!” Natasha said as lunched at Humphrey but just then Lance tackled her sending the both them off the cliff.

Humphrey came over and looked below and saw Lance and Natasha hanging for their lives and right below them was a deadly mudslide. Humphrey grabbed a vine with mouth and hanged over the edge of the cliff “Lance grab my tail” “Grab your what?” “Take those big teeth of yours and grab my-“just then Lance leaped upwards and grabbed Humphrey’s tail with his jaws “Ow my tail, really have to find less painful forms of rescue”. As Humphrey pulled Lance back up on the cliff Natasha tried to reach them the rock she was holding on to broke apart and she fell into the mud slide.

The rain had become lighter and soon stopped as Humphrey and Lance made their way back to the top where Kate and the others were.

Marcel looked over the cliff and saw Humphrey climbing up, he then held his golf club down at Humphrey. Humphrey then grabbed the end of the club with his mouth, Marcel then pulled and helped Humphrey climb over “Hurry Kate just about to give birth to the first pu-“ but Marcel stopped at the sounds of soft sobbing. They looked towards Kate saw a black ball of fur at Kate’s side, Kate then let out a scream and a bluish grey ball of fur came out of Kate. Humphrey over to Kate “It’s alright Kate I’m here” with Humphrey there Kate was able to give birth to the last pup.

Ray of the sunset went through the clouds as Humphrey and Kate watched their newborn pups sleep at their mother’s chest. A tear of joy rolled from Kate’s eye as Humphrey licked their little ones.

Lance and Nova watched as the experience reminded them of when they had their pup “I forgot what it’s like to see a newborn” Nova said as she started to tear up “Yeah, what about you two ever thought of having a family” Lance said turning over to Mick and Donald who were also watching.

“What the?!” Marcel said walking over to them followed by Paddy

“Didn’t I knock you out?”

“Not really, the balls knocked us down for a while but not completely out” Mick said

“When we got back up we were about to rip you to shreds but we got stunned by the horrifying beauty of birth” Donald said.

Just then Garth knocked their heads together “That’ll do it” Garth said.


Meanwhile down below at the bottom of the hideout, after a while in the battle Shadow’s pack had their enemy out numbered. Lance came down and stood in front Slash.

“It’s over Slash, Natasha is dead and my troops have you out numbered.I’ll give this chance for you to go free on one condition, you and your pack shall leave us alone” Slash growled and called for his troops to retreat.
